The Inspiration Room: What Goes Around Comes Around

The posters are amazing...so very true...what you do to others, gets back to you...kuddos to the ppl behind this ad campaign! Hope the message of this campaign reaches to the right ppl who need to understand this!
  • Rick · 7 months ago
Nice idea .. especially as far as selling weaponry to our future enemies is concerned; however, I do realize the necessity to be pro-active in times of war. I would, on the other hand, like to see similar posters showing the 'what goes around, comes around' theme for the sale of handguns and assault weapons. That's where the problem is, as you can tell from the violence here and in Mexico.
  • John · 7 months ago
This brings to the forefront, the history-long tension between the virtue of "do unto others..." and the reality that many times the only thing that can deter the aggressor is superior strength. While negotiating these difficult waters is posed to all of us on a personal level throughout our lives, I do not envy those who must make these decisions in the name of the collective 'us'.

    Rick May:
I'm sure you left the word "illegal" out of the phrase "for the sale of handguns and assault weapons", because it's implausible for anyone to be so illogical as to believe that gun control laws will deter someone willing to commit murder over a few thousand dollars from obtaining a weapon because of the illegality of possessing said weapon. Because, you know, that mentality has also worked wonders for the possession and consumption of drugs. Oh, wait...

posters are good but i do have issues with the whole message that it is trying to say. not the soldiers fault that they are fighting this screwed up war. though i know they know what they are getting in to but its not their idea to fight there.... at least for the majority

Yup...America is evil...wait! The developer lives in new York? The largest city in the United States!? OH! That's right! The U.S. is one of the few countries that's ever existed that would allow it's citizens to produce something like this.

Anyways...the posters are cool, but the message is lame.
  • Declan · 7 months ago
Brilliant concept, surprised someone hasn't thought of something like this before. Though I suppose everything is obvious after it's been done.

Former Soldier: It's not meant to be aimed at soldiers. You're being too literal. I still empathise with you're sentiments however.

Robert: You're an idiot. 9/11 and Iraq aren't related.
  • Rebecca · 7 months ago
I can't believe someone would make something showing harm to our soldiers.I hope that you get what you have coming back to you...

it is because of the soldiers that are fighting for you that you can post these posters.
  • stephanie · 7 months ago
Think what you want about our country's foreign policy and how we handle military conflicts, but how can you target specific soldiers who are merely doing their job. So many soldiers are in the military trying to get ahead and provide for their families; many of them don't necessarily agree with the wars that our country is involved in, but they have signed up to serve their country, and this is what it is they are assigned to do. They give up years of their lives for YOUR freedom and sacrifice being safe at home. So regardless of what our COUNTRY should be doing, soldiers shouldn't be targeted.

If you want to target "what goes around, comes around" (if you must) look at where the issue originates, and here's a hint, it's not with the soldiers putting their lives on the line.
  • Declan · 7 months ago
It's not targeted at the soldiers!!! People, do you not understand subtext??????????
It IS about the foreign policy!
  • John · 7 months ago
I am a soldier who has returned from Iraq. These pictures are disgusting! I do not care about your personal opinions about the war or whether you agree with it or not. These pictures show harm to soldiers, your fellow Americans. I did not join the military to go to Iraq, it was not my choice or decision to go but I went because its my job. I joined the military to protect the rights and freedoms you all enjoy that so many people before me have fought and died for.

Have your opinions about the war but show respect to the soldiers who protect your right to hold those opinions. I was lucky enough to have returned safely but I have lost many friends over there. Their is no bigger slap in the face for us (soldiers) than to be targeted by people who put the blame on us for doing our job. People who refuse to step up to the plate and defend the very rights they are abusing.

If the issue is the U.S. being in Iraq and wanting to bring the soldiers home it seems a little counter productive to have an ad campaign suggesting harm to those soldiers you want home.
  • John · 7 months ago
If it is about foreign policy and it is not about the soldiers. Why show pictures the clearly suggest harm and death coming to the soldiers in the pictures?
  • Rebecca · 7 months ago
it may be about "foreign policy" but the majority of Americans are not going to see it that way.

In a campaign you should have something that can be understood by the masses, this is not.

These pictures show harm to your own people, it is vile and disgusting and overall embarrassing.

Declan: How can you say it is not targeted at the soldiers when it shows missiles, grenades, tanks, and the barrel of a gun pointed at soldiers. I am taking the imagery on a literal standpoint. I realize the target is foreign policy, these images do not convey that. That is all I and others are saying.

The campaign is terrible in the presentation of its message.

Stupid Americans think the internet is only used by Americans.
  • Declan · 7 months ago
Because it's being clever, who is supposed to see the poster? Do you think that they are putting these up in army bases?
It actually doesn't show harm to them It used a simple technique to illustrate the point, what goes around comes around. It's a perfect example of good graphic design.
  • Declan · 7 months ago
That last one was to John.

Rebecca: Most of what I just said applies to what you just said. What you're forgetting is that the Iraq war was not protecting America.
  • cbmiller · 7 months ago
I would like to see you face the parent of a dead soldier with these ads. Yes, the pictures are amazing, put your talents to better use. Doing this will never stop the war...the ads are like protestors...they just annoy the hell out of everyone and dont serve a purpose.
  • Rebecca · 7 months ago
they may not be "directly" protecting America, but the soldiers are doing their job.
  • Rebecca · 7 months ago
Declan: you say "Do you think that they are putting these up in army bases?"

clearly you see a problem with what the images convey.
  • Dwindle · 7 months ago
Cute, but nonsense. Being peaceful caused Al-Queda to attack us twice, killing thousands. Launching war made them puny and impotent. There's a good reason why no one starts wars with the US any more.
  • Brett · 7 months ago
I don't really see a need for these. The Iraq war is winding down, the war in Afghanistan is winding up, but haven't seen any major public outcry against that war. Hmmmm.
I can see the negative connotation these posters can have regarding soldiers. If they wanted the raise a foreign policy discussion then why not feature a picture of the US Capital?
  • Rebecca · 7 months ago
Brett: Precisely, nothing is really being said about Afghanistan. I have friends in Afghanistan who are soldiers, I hear that it is worse their than it is in Iraq. This is something I heard from a soldier who was deployed in Iraq as well,so I'd like to think he might know what he is talking about.

    Dwindle: exactly.

seeing how i am a soldier in the army, i am on two week leave and found these posters.. the thing about the freedom of speech is that everyone practices it, so it is seen on a global forum not just on that city street. so showing fratricide (friendly killing) is rather disturbing. being that it is ones own barrel or grenade being pointed at ones self.... I am appalled, I never thought i would see something so crude being portrayed about our military.. As far as everyone's opinions on the war unless you are serving or have served we as soldiers would appreciate less bashing of the soldiers and more aimed towards the government and the politicians you elected. I am all for defending my country... But there is a breaking point.... An end to this. The US is headed in a bad direction. I just hope our Commander In Chief can steer us clear of this Global 'asteroid' we are headed for.
  • Chris · 7 months ago
This is not an attack on the soldiers, the soliders are simply being used as a visual representation (there isn't a better one) for our military.

The posters are saying that our militaries use of force will turn around to bite us in the ass if we continue to use it as we are.

Sadly, I think this intended meaning isn't instantly accessible to everyone who might see it, so the poster probably isn't going to have the same emotional and reasonable appeal that it might have if it could somehow be more clear what it was saying.

It is unfortunate that so many won't understand it, but this kind of work should be used to affect as many as possible, and in that sense it probably won't work.

    Just my thoughts.
  • billdave · 7 months ago
The people in the posters are soldiers and they are indeed targeted. That's because soldiers are indeed the ones who are targeted in Iraq and in wars in general (though of course plenty of civilians are too.) The idea that somehow it is horrible to show soldiers put in harms way by war is ridiculous. This isn't aimed to blame soldiers for the war, but rather to show that they don't just go over and "establish order," but instead are put in harms way by the violence they are there to participate in.
Pretending that everything soldiers do is heroic, that there are no real consequences to pay for choosing war, and that it's unpatriotic to suggest that the US is part of the violence is exactly the sort of bad-faith that got them into Iraq in the first place.
  • billdave · 7 months ago
And dwindle: There are stacks of bodies being shipped home from overseas. Tell the kid being shot at and the people left behind when he's killed that no one is making war against the US now. Sending teens to die abroad is not acceptable foreign policy and is not damaging the cause of international terrorism, it is helping it. Read even the Bush administration's report on extremist and jihadist activity post-Iraq.
  • J · 7 months ago
Does this poster come in picture of Muslim throwing rock (aka stoning woman to death)? Or how about cutting his own head off with a steak knife?
  • Garrett · 7 months ago
SoldierUnknown "As far as everyone’s opinions on the war unless you are serving or have served we as soldiers would appreciate less bashing of the soldiers and more aimed towards the government and the politicians you elected."

This may not apply to you directly, but many people also have strong opinions against gay rights, and as a gay man i feel obligated to say "Since I am gay, I would appreciate it if you would try being gay before bashing me."

    That logic makes no sense...

And plenty of other nations would and do allow such imagery in their countries. So whoever says that the U.S. is the only country with such freedoms...that's just plain stupid. And I agree with BillDave...soldiers from any military are there specifically to put themselves in harms way to prevent the harm of other countrymen.
  • Lori · 7 months ago
    Bad idea. Period.
  • Lori · 7 months ago
And another thing, all of you anti-war people: wars have been waged since the beginning of time. It's irresponsible to not be prepared for attack and it's irresponsible to allow an attack on our people go without consequence. As your poster so ineptly tries to convey--what comes around, goes around.
  • Values1 · 7 months ago
Funny, if I disagreed with my country that strongly, and were against all violence, the only option would be to leave, because whining without the backing of physical action does nothing. Since your only option is to leave, I find it funny that you stay in America. You so greatly disagree with this countries policies, yet you stay and pay taxes and support the system, why? Could it be that the very system you hate has provided you with a better standard of living than anywhere else? Guess that just means you are the kind of person who will trade your values for the ease that comes with living in a great nation like this. Putting up posters does nothing.

You poor misinformed, indoctrinated, inbred “patriotic” people in the US, you really need to go out into the world and learn about real democracy. Get real, fight your wars at home. Morons.

I guess liberating 25 million in Iraq from a ruthless dictator was a bad idea. My uncle's death liberating Europe from Hitler was a bad idea too. All you have to do is talk to "bad people" and they will see the error of their ways.
  • Stephen · 7 months ago
Adder Venom you shouldn't be talking SHIT like that to Americans. you obviously haven't studied American history, there has been fifteen wars fought on American soil, and five wars that were pretty major. I'll list a few. The American Revolution for example was to escape the values of the Brits across the pond. That war gave us the right to speak our minds and be able to put posters like these up(even if I don't agree with them). Another would be the Civil War which aside from the Amer. Rev. was probably the war that had to happen for the U.S. as a country to abolish slavery and help advance in civil rights for men and women from different backgrounds and cultures to be able to live with each other as equals. And according to you things like that isn't "patriotic". That said, there is still people as arrogant and ignorant as YOU living here. It makes me sick that you would stoop to that level. You are the dirt beneath my feet.I am proud to be an American!
  • Adder Venom · 7 months ago
The attack on Iraq was a pretext of them having Weapons of Mass Destruction and "your" precious oil, it had nothing to do with a dictator, read up on the facts, first you supported Saddam and when he didn't want to play ball anymore, you invaded after 9/11. Even though everyone knows that he had nothing to do with it. And of course all Iraqi people love you now don't they? That is why it was so easy for you to win, but no, you are still there getting a beating. Like you always are when you fight wars outside your own country. SOme of your proud citizens still live in reservations, something to be very proud of. Another thing is that the history with which you are fed with in school are wrong as well. Get out and get hold of an objective source. I'm not the ignorant one, you are. I have lived in 38 different countries in my life time, closing 68 now, and of all people I've come acros US citizens are by far the most arrogant.
  • Adder Venom · 7 months ago
"I am proud to be an American", the very sentence show your ignorance as well.
  • throwingstones · 7 months ago
I am an American. I am shocked at how ignorant so many Americans posting comments here are. Freed Iraqi'a from a dictator? We destroyed a modern country in the first Gulf War, then went back to finish the job when W said "He tried to kill my dad." Got attacked because we were peaceful? You really need to get the facts straight. The US has dabbled in every dirty little conflict in the world, we put Saddam and Bin Laden in power, gave them weapons and money, then expected them to lay down like trained dogs when we wanted them to do something different, and that is just the tip of the ice berg. US foreign policy has been dirty, deceitful and destructive to millions across the world, and so yeah, 9/11 is proof that "what goes around, comes around". Besides, everyone seems to forget that Americans were not the only ones that died in that attack, there were many from around the world. And at this point, we have surpassed in deaths of American soldiers the number that died in 9/11, not to mention the thousands of American soldiers permanently maimed, physically and emotionally, for life. It is sad and scary that so many in this country are glad to remain ignorant, instead of looking at the facts and holding Bush and his regime accountable for the destruction they have caused, at home and abroad. It is the duty of all Americans to hold their government accountable, to question what we are told, to make our elected representatives uphold the constitution and the values set forth by our founders. Not to just sit back and swallow what they feed us. Demand the truth, demand real freedom, demand justice, and take no less.
  • Peter Bevan · 7 months ago
THROWINGSTONES: I could not agree with you more! I too am an Americain but, I'm not too particularly proud of what they do. Since Vietnam I have been living outside the country, I refuse to be living with "warmongers".

I love the posters! The concept is totally original and the message is true (IMHO)
  • Catching Stones · 7 months ago
I agree with throwingstones, you've just concisely summed up nearly everything I wanted to say.
People who say that the soldiers in Iraq (they weren't just americans) are protecting people back home... how?
We've had plenty of soldiers from the UK die out there, none of us are entirely sure why we went in the first place. Blair followed Bush blindly, as far as most of us are concerned.
  • Catching Stones · 7 months ago
    Oh yeah...the posters...
They're good, really clever idea. I especially like the friendly fire connotations, theres been a lot of that.
  • Adder Venom · 7 months ago
    THROWINGSTONES:
I could not have said it better myself. Glad to see that there are still some normal people out there. Citizens of the US are US Americans not americans, there are other americans as well, you seem to forget the country north of your own and the countries belonging to the south american continent. Enough said a bout that. A question: don't you think that you are being brainwashed from the first day in school? being forced to swear allegiance to the flag etc...how absurd isn't that? think you are among the few countries in the world still doing that, what about the democratic choice there? do you have to do that or do you have a choice? If you really want to do good, remove the dictator in North Korea. And how weird are your election system already, that isn't true majority democracy is it? I have so many issues but only alimited amount of time and space...You do not have democracy in your country, that is what you are thought to believe.
  • Rachael. · 7 months ago
Americans are idiots. I clearly got the concept as soon as I saw it.

My only problem is that the posters need a specific sized pole or else they will overlap or not reach around. To the people in the peace coalition that this is for: Keep up the good work. The more eyes that are opened means less people in the ignorant mass population residing in the US.
  • Edgar Raven · 7 months ago
Very nice design, and does exactly what its supposed to: shock people.

I find it ironic how many of you are so obsessed with the notion that soldiers are "Just doing their job". Thats naive at best, and criminal at worst.

Murdering people by the millions is NOT a job OR a legitimate way to advance your situation in life, regardless of whether you're ordered to do so or not. Hitler's Nazi's were ordered to kill Jews, does that make it ok? Are we to dismiss their actions because it was "their job" ?! Think a little bit. Responsibility NEEDS to be placed on soldiers AS WELL as those who give the orders.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a patriot, and I love my country as well as have many friends in the army. But lets not blind ourselves, lets use a little critical thinking here.

The fact of the matter is that Iraq was NOT a defensive war, it was NOT a protection of the American people, that much is clear. It has accomplished nothing besides a severe deficit, an economic recession, and given time to terrorists in Afghanistan to recover and grow in strength.

Country, please, its time to wake up and look at things the way they are, not the way we wished they were. Lets stop making excuses for each other, for the love of the world.
  • Edgar Raven · 7 months ago
A little side note for those who will inevitably attack my post.

I have no beef with soldiers, quite the contrary. They epitomize self-sacrifice and the willingness to lay down their lives for their family and friends back home.

But they enlisted, theres a reason the army is voluntary. If they're willing to lay down their lives and fight to kill, they should also have no illusions about who the responsibility lies with.

In fact, I suspect that most veterans realize this all too well (hence the emotional trauma), and that its the people back home who see nothing of the bloodshed who legitimize their actions.

That said, long live America. I only hope that one day we will be as true to your ideals as we claim.

well as far as i'm concerned this is a good cause.
It's true that most of the Americans are ignorant when it comes to foreign policies, and it actually shows when they start BSing about muslims in particular and the middle east in general. what do you people know about us other than what your leaders want you to know? which is mostly untrue and is totally absurd!!! i read something about stoning women, man that's really absurd!!! i feel pity for all of you out there who think that The USA is the best country in the world, well at least, to me, Lebanon is the best country in the world.
let us face and be real for one time, what justifies your war on Iraq? the so called al qaeda criminals? did you ever ask yourself who created this group? did you ever consider going to Palestine to see whether Israelis' claims are true and unbiased? did you ever think of how life has become in iraq after your troops invaded it? you'll never understand such things, because you're living in your own big fat bubble with nothing but prejudice and poisoning commercials.
one final question, does your army recruit soldier for free? giving them no incentives, no payroll, not even offering them a single penny in return? NO! your army recruit you with commercials and ads, Blood money to be more precise. Wake up and yes, what goes around comes around if not now then sometime soon.
  • xinita · 7 months ago
There's one thing I hate the most about the internet - some americans spreading their ignorance around the world. "You sick people depicting a soldier being harmed you bastard God will kill you" and etc are the words I tend to read whenever I stumble upon war stuff on the internet. Thing is, as Throwingstones said, this is not a defensive war and I don't know why americans get so offended when someone says so. No, these soldiers you people are supporting are not defending your family and friends back in the USA because I haven't seen or heard about iraqi bombs hitting your pretty white suburbs in your country so they are not defending you. What they are defending is the oil Ex President Bush always wanted and your own ignorance. If you keep believing this then you must be retarded.

Once I thought I'd never be able to find a clever and smart american in the world, now I've found some so I hope I will find more someday.
  • Anton · 7 months ago
Honestly, if these pictures offend you, you're far to stupid to see the point of them. If I were to say "I love this website like a fat kid loves cake", is the point of my sentence to make fun of fat kids and bring attention to the nutritional properties of baked deserts?

Obviously not. The point is that I enjoy the website. The simile was only a literary device used to help convey that message.

Everyone is so uptight these days. Take a deep breath, stop looking at everything with tunnel vision and try to find the meaning behind things -- You'll come to find that most people actually have good intentions.

If you try hard enough, you might even find enough humility to swallow your swollen pride and admit you're getting all worked up over absolutely nothing.
  • Sam Ledbetter · 7 months ago
People, you can say "many of the soldiers are involved to get ahead and support their families", but do you not realize that Al Qaeda pays civilians to plant roadside bombs, toss grenades, etc., and in a war torn area, that money is a lot more scarce meaning people naturally will go to further extremes to obtain it. American soldiers are not defending freedom, they are getting shot for multinational corporations, whichever they may be. You need to look at things from different perspectives to get an opinion thats worth a damn.

And OBVIOUSLY this ad is not promoting harm to our soldiers, it's a message about our foreign policy, take a hint people.
  • Mike · 7 months ago
Hating your country never goes out of style.
  • Sailor · 7 months ago
    I find this offensive.

You really shouldn't depict US soldiers getting killed or in harms way. I hear your arguments, but you must understand how families feel!

US soldiers aren't planting roadside bombs. They aren't supporting a government that's mass graves are still being uncovered. They aren't publicly defying the morals their religion guards.

Take it from me. I've got a lot of dead friends who would tell you too had they not died so that you could write your post.

    I quote Bob Dylan:

"Don't criticise what you can't understand."

You know the uniform but you don't know the faces. You know the name but you don't know the war. You know how to talk but you don't know how to listen.

You don't even know how to really see.

"I can’t believe someone would make something showing harm to our soldiers.I hope that you get what you have coming back to you…

it is because of the soldiers that are fighting for you that you can post these posters."

    Otherwise translated as:

"These soldiers are out there fighting for your right to say these things, which means you aren't allowed to say them."

I have to say, though, that from a design point of view, the posters are clever and effective - especially the first two.

    Adder Venom-
When you talked about brainwashing, concerning forced pledges all throughout school, you are correct. I am a high school student in Texas (of all the places!) and while they do not force you to pledge, many teachers will talk down to you, degrade, and insult you if you refuse, and will send you to speak with an assistant principal, not even thinking for one second that the pledge glorifies the Christian God, so for many students the pledge could be considered swearing against his/her own God. On another note, i had an assignment concerning 9/11, and after voicing my opinions on the paper, my teacher confronted me after class, insulted me, and ultimately sent the paper to the principal. Now the principal obviously discarded her complaint, because i was never sent to talk to him about it. But the fact that the ones we as teens are supposed to look up to are the same people insulting us for a particular opinion is sad, even frightening.

There clever design and bad marketing. In a clever and witty way they communicate a message which some very large portion of the population will take as different from what the designer intended. As a designer you want to communicate your message or your clients message. Imagine a campaign for some company's product that in some clever, witty way communicated that you should buy the product and ALSO made a lot of people think you hate them. Is that good design?

I love that because I express views different from many posted on here I am considered ignorant, inbred, retarded and plain stupid.

I think it shows that you are ignorant. It doesn't matter what I think though because you will choose to depict people who support their troops as idiots.

My father served in the Navy for 20 years and my boyfriend has been in the Army for 4 years, 1 of which was served in Iraq.

I don't understand why a campaign is being made to bring soldiers home from Iraq, when the war in Afghanistan is on the upswing. We are not even deploying as many soldiers to Iraq as we are Afghanistan. Not knowing this, shows your ignorance of the war.

You can say that schools brainwashed me into standing up for my country and believing everything I hear. You believe that this war is just about oil, is that not brainwashing on your part? Where did you get your facts?

I have not said anything about my views of the war. I have clearly spoken on my views of soldiers. I love and respect them and would not dream of doing anything but respecting those men and women who choose to do something so many are too weak to do.

I know many of you won't even read this comment equating me with some back woods extremist anti-everything group. I am not that person, nor am I living in a perfect suburb.

So many people that don't live in the U.S. depict us as idiotic, unintelligent inbred people who follow blindly behind anyone in power. How ignorant are you to equate an entire nation with the few handfuls of Americans you have met?

I am open minded and accepting of many things, one thing I do not accept is showing harm to our own people. I realize what the graphic means, and yes it DOES NOT show our soldiers being blown to pieces. It does show the potential. It's saying we are going to get what is coming to us. Who protects the U.S.? Soldiers..so in the long run you are saying that our soldiers will be killed..but they have it coming to them.SO sucks to be the guy who chose to be a soldier because when he gets killed , you won't care. You will sit behind the computer being your "oh so educated self, sipping your overpriced coffee, bitching about how much America sucks"

If you are living in America and hate it so much, or hate the health care system: LEAVE. It is that simple, if other countries have it "right" move there.Call me ignorant, but I don't live somewhere unless I enjoy it or it offers me what I need. Jobs are at an all time low, so you have a perfect reason to leave!

I don't understand why people live off complaining so much about America. Maybe its like a 10 year old mentality of "I am going to pick on something, but its only because I really like it" or are jealous of our ability to do whatever we set our minds to.

I know this was long winded but all people who support the soldiers are not uneducated. I am tired of being equated with extremist groups because I support my father and boyfriend and many friends who are willing to stand up for their beliefs. Something many would not do, they can hide behind their computers and bash all they want, they are never in harms way.

"Grenades, rifles, missiles and tank guns come round the pole to catch up with the aggressor in each poster. "

Yeah ok, no frickin' bias there. In each case the soldier is the aggressor. We wouldn't have been there in the first place if a bunch of backwards assed extremists weren't "agressive" to us first. Why don't the posters show a suicide bomber or a muslim extremist beating his wife for showing skin. What comes around...

This is not a poster about foreign policy, it is a blatant slam to the war in the middle east and nothing more. There is also the element of threat of reprisal by saying what goes around comes around. In a sense it is like, "you will get yours".
  • Scott · 7 months ago
Ahh - to be young, liberal and naive. These posters are just more of the same mindless, dangerously innocent code pink pablum that blissfully ignores reality, and celebrates the notion that absolutely nothing is worth fighting for. To assume that the war in Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11 only demonstrates a remarkable vacancy of middle east history over the last 40 years. What goes around IS coming around now - to a region of the world that stubbornly refuses to learn how to govern itself, or even manage the basic feat of feeding it's people. The writer who suggested using a jihadist instead of a soldier as the subject matter had it exactly right. As long as Islamic countries fail to take responsibility for and speak out against the spread of Islamic extremism, they will need to be 'policed'. It's that simple. America seems to be one of only a handful of countries that understands this, and many of our own citizens still don't. While there were several choices aside from Afghanistan post 9/11 of where in the middle east we needed to be to undertake any serious response to the terrorist attack on our country, Iraq was the most logical choice, and in hindsight now appears to be a brilliant policy decision. While American liberals will never admit it, a tremendous debt of gratitude is owed to America and it's brave soldiers, for accomplishing in a little over 5 years, what has eluded almost every country in the region for over 4000: Establishing a stable democracy in the middle east.

I wonder how many of those defending the "simile" "subtext" and "underlying message" of this posters were furious when the New Yorker depicted Obama as a Muslim, or when the cartoonist showed the Chimpanzee shot by the police and mentioned stimulus package. Everyone assumed they were calling Obama a monkey. There was subtext in both of those examples yet all the libs got their organic panties in a wad. I guess they need a lesson in reading between the lines as well.

Subtext or not, I believe these posters are very poorly done. There was an obvious attempt to be inflamatory.

Too bad these people probably don't realize that they live in a country where it is legal to do such things. Wow freedom comes with responsibility. Stupid liberals don't get anything. You just keep complaining about the war because you sit on your fat ass at home and do nothing and the people in the military actually make something of their lives.
  • scott · 7 months ago
wow leave it to the typical liberal media to use their falsified opinions to create such a disgusting message. Yes you may disagree with the war but why would you target the people who sacrifice their lives to protect you. This just shows the uneducated blame everything mentality that plagues most of America today. How about you get off your designer sofa and try to actually put yourself in a soldiers shoes you left wing radical.

Some people have no respect for our armed forces. If you have a problem with a decision that is made regarding a war or conflict petition your Senators and Representatives to change something about it, but never ridicule or criticize the men and women who fight and die for your right to even make posters like these. I am ashamed that pages and ads like these even exist in the world.
  • JohnJ · 7 months ago
God, most of you are idiots. We didn't invade Iraq because of terrorist actions. Al Queda is not operating in Iraq, and there is ABSOLUTELY NO CORRELATION BETWEEN 9/11 and our invasion of Iraq. The posters are commenting on Iraq... and I think they are brilliant.

These comments illustrate just how intelligent most Americans are, and yes, I'm an American. Not exactly something I'm proud of any more.
  • Marcello Petrigh · 7 months ago
Congratulations. YES, what goes around comes around. I lived some 37 years in the Middle East (I am a christian European, don't have any other ideas). We and the Zionists messed up the area. We had some good friends and now all the governments are picked up by us, and we talk about democracy. They are becoming more and more extremists: do you think we can militarily beat 350 millions Arabs, becoming more and more fanatics, and 1.5 billions Moslems, fanatics also ? Let's negotiate or leave them to take care of themselves. They have nothing against us. They are not here we are there.
  • Scott · 7 months ago
Interesting comment Marcello. I believe that the vast majority of Americans would support leaving the middle east to take care of themselves - if only they would. The history of the region doesn't bode well for the success of that plan however. The populations of the middle east have been murdering each other for generations. It's only when they allowed their stone age religious fervor to spill over to the rest of the world that we were forced to act. If you remove the funding from terrorists, all you're left with is a bunch of angry desert nomads. It doesn't matter if there's 10 or 1.5 Billion. I think the middle east is actually on the right path. Sure you can whine about how much they hate America, but the governments of the region are one by one coming to the conclusion that it is NOT in their best interests to support radical Islam. Wasn't it Patton who said "They'll like us when we win."?

I think Americans need to stop getting into wars. How's that panning out for you guys? Well? Near 5000 soldiers dead. And for what? I still don't even know why USA invaded Iraq, except to extract oil and give those military contractors some sweet bonuses. Maybe stop going to war with different countries, stop acting like the world's Police, and maybe other countries in the world would like you a little better.

We don't even have any proof that Al Qaeda had anything to do with 9/11. If we do explain to me why Osama Bin Laden is only wanted by the FBI for something he did way before 9/11. Thirdly, EVERYONE wanted to kick some Saddam tail after 9/11, and W didnt just make some wild hair decision to go open a can, a collaborative decision was made based on information that was provided to him as well as the Allies... No one wants to go to war but sometimes its a necessary evil... Fourthly, Adder Venom, there is a GOD and you along with everyone else will bow before him some day... Believe that!!
  • Dixon · 7 months ago
Wow. Some of these comments are painful to read. First of all, I'm tired of hearing that soldiers protect my freedom. From whom? The USA is not in any danger from external enemies. We won't be invaded by Canada or Mexico any time soon. Internal enemies, on the other hand, have been very effective at limiting my freedom in the name of protecting my freedom. Second, Sadam Heusein was an enemy of Al Qaueda. The did not collaborate on the 9/11 attacks. If you went to Iraq, you were following orders but you weren't gettin' any pay-back for 9/11. And Third, my constitution is very clear on whom has the right to declare war (hint: it's not the president). Any president that declared war, congress that authorized it, or army that fought said war was not protecting American ideals. If you participated in the Iraq war, you came closer to defending a monarchist vendetta ("Sadam tried to kill my dad!") than exercising American values.

    Soldiers volunteered.
If I worked for a company that did something terrible, like say, released a product that killed children, I would quit. Perhaps it's time soldiers did the same, instead of murdering thousands of people.
The ignorance of the general population of the USA astounds me. It is incredibly telling of how well the ruling class has lead the "people" to believe that outside the USA is evil, and scary and that there is no better place in the world.
How close minded can you possibly be.

The ads however, are brilliant, whether directed at the soldiers or not.

Mike: You did not come up with the ideas of what a "typical" person from the USA thinks. It was a funny map someone else made and posted online.

Anyone not from the U.S.: Your opinion is much like my opinion of your countries..it doesn't matter. You don't live the life of someone living here, how can you throw in your 2 cents on something you know nothing about?

Republicans and people who support the troops don't just watch Fox News. I never watch Fox News. I listen to both sides on my XM/Sirius radio when driving to work. Channels (America Right) (America Left) check it out.

I find it humorous how many non-Americans bash America, yet you move here to escape high taxes and health care that isn't competitive. I personally love my health care, I have a job and am a full time student yet I still manage to afford to keep myself healthy. It is really not that hard of a concept.I also don't like waiting forever to see my doctor.

American troops are not the only ones in this war, yet we are targeted above all others.

Your blessed European troops are there as well! Check your facts!

Again, If you hate America and are not from here I don't care. If you hate America and do live here, leave. What is holding you to a country you hate so much??

I enjoy how people here are complaining about the Iraq War when it is hardly an issue anymore. The Iraqi War is winding down, the Afghanistan War is starting to flare again though. The reason everybody bitches about the Iraq war though is because it is a war of attrition. We have insurgents over there dancing circles around our soldiers while back here we complain about any plan of action. The US needs to be more decisive. We should have gone into total war and completely purged Iraq earlier on, or f**king pull out. Enough of this wretched leadership

Not like we do not have enough problems at home. I can guarantee that within our lifetimes, the US will cease to be an economic power. And NOT because of this NATURAL economic recession. But because, believe it or not, of all the "fair" business laws we pass. We think we are making the world a better place by forcing businesses to be socially responsible? Wrong. Socially Responsible companies make less money, as opposed to all the factories in China and Taiwan and Japan. All of whom we import products from. So US companies are now making less money because we are forced to spend money on things others do not. To sum that crap up, in this world economy we are making less money because we are expected to be the "Fair Big Brother" of the f**king world. End Result? Higher inflation rates to cover the costs of implementing these pissant laws, and other countries stealing market shares from US companies. Which forces them to downsize, and cut your jobs. So why don't we all celebrate by taking the piss and raising minimum wage. Why don't we teach our kids this stuff?

Also What makes people think their religion is right? I would like to see some conclusive proof that the popular mythology some people call Christianity is better than Islam, or Judaism, Hinduism, or even Pagan? What is so wrong with letting people choose their own salvation? In fact, Judaism is the only one of the three biggies that says there are other ways of attaining salvation than their way. Islam says they must eradicate non-believers (There's that hyphen again! darndest thing. And Christianity says that with a slightly milder tone. Anybody up for an inquisition? Or two, or three.

yeah i understand what they are trying to say however it is ignorant liberal propaganda. obviously none of you people actually pick up a news paper or turn on the news and try to think for yourself. • An African · 7 months ago
I agree with throwingstones and all others who undertand the images and the message they convey. But this is more for those that do not understand and do not know what they say.

The message seems to be not that soldiers are pointing weapons at themselves; It's that they were sent there to point guns at others, who will inevitably point their own guns back at the unlawful and unjustified invaders.
It is about questioning the sense behind sending your fathers, sons, brothers and friends to their death for your privilege to drive around in cars that consume a gallon of fuel for each mile you drive.
It's about questioning the sense behind sending your countrymen to war for the profts of those that make the weapons for both sides and don't give a shit about liberty, life, justice, democracy, human rights and all the other wonderful ideas America was founded on.
It's about questioning the sense behind tormenting both your invading countrymen as well as the invaded Iraqui people with death and destruction and calling it a glorious victory for the forces of good, while actually forcing the aforesaid invaded to accept one fascist regime for another in disguise.
It's just a way of illustrating the irony and futility of trying to fight 'terrorism' by becoming a terrorist yourself (not person for person, but america as a collective people).

And if any American does not realise the folly of their collective actions and attitude towards the rest of the world, and who does not understand the meaning of the message in the poster, need only read a history book. The pattern you will come to see is that ALL great empires, no matter how powerful they appeared to be, that attempted to impose their beliefs and ideals on other nations through war and opression, have fallen and been condemned to the ashes of history by the very conflicts they so ignorantly sought.

    Peace

Haha, looks at all the angry foreigners posting on here about how much they hate us. I hope it makes you all feel better. Come back when you actually want to pick a fight with us, we'll turn your country into a smoking hole.

People are so misguided. America has no obligation to be anyone's friend. We choose to be. And people in Europe and elsewhere mistake that for weakness, and demand more and more concessions. Well, guess what? If we wanted to, we could become the Roman Empire or the Qin Empire and brutally colonize the rest of the world.

And before you say "but you're already brutally colonizing," how many countries are under our direct control? Have we invaded Latin America and forced them to send us money and people? No. The Middle East attacked us and it hated us. I don't think we could have found more deserving countries to attack than Iraq and Afghanistan, two anti-American nations that were also bastions of misery, oppression, and murder. At the very least, things are only as bad as they once were (but I'd argue that since Saddam's rape rooms are gone, they're a teeny bit better).

In short, everyone critical from Europe and elsewhere can continue their little masturbatory "internet activism" sessions. If it makes you feel better to make fun of and criticize the most powerful nation in the world because we let you, go ahead. Just remember that if we were totalitarian (like the USSR) or fanatically nationalist (like the Chinese), you would all be in a much worse position than you are now. Be grateful we don't crush you.

The total American force – including active-duty, reserve, and guard – is about 2.2 million. So yes, bring it on. True, America is about as reluctant an empire as there ever was, but make no mistake - the world pays attention to what is done here, and at the highest levels of government and the world financial system, (except for a handful of third world nations) despite the obligatory whining in public, EVERYONE wants to be our friend. I'm an American, proud of it, and quite patriotic. No, I don't agree with everything our country has done, past or present. I view the fact of "Supporting our Troops" as quite different than "Supporting the War on Terror." I think that those people who created these ads should have targeted the politicians, not our troops.

A previous poster, Stephanie, said it just right

"If you want to target “what goes around, comes around” (if you must) look at where the issue originates, and here’s a hint, it’s not with the soldiers putting their lives on the line."

as for people like Dixon.. I just want you all to realize that these soldiers you speak down on are following orders. They joined the military to serve their country, and you should learn how to respect that.

or Steve who said something along the lines of "it's voluntary..I'd quit," well buddy, it's called a contract and having consequences for going AWOL (you can't just quit until your ToS is up).

For all of you Anti-American posters out there (Adder Venom / Xinita).. Adder, you say that people who are proud to be Americans show their own ignorance in that very phrase? How so? How do we exhibit our ignorance by saying we are proud to be Americans? Are you not proud of your country? or of being a citizen of your country?

If I say I am proud to be an American, it does not mean that I support every little action of my country, its leaders, or its policies. Please tell me where your reasoning comes from.

Also Adder, "following orders just like the Nazis" is usually referred to as the "Nuremberg Defense," and does not necessarily apply here. Any one knows that if any military institution can not have orders followed efficiently and with out question, things that needed to be done, would not get done. Simply put. We aren't asking our soldiers to gas flocks of people either, are we?

Xinita and all the rest of you posting about the oil in Iraq, I'll tell you right now I sure as hell haven't benefited from the oil everyone claims Bush went in there to 'steal.' Otherwise, I wouldn't have been paying 4 USD (or more in other places) for a gallon of gas. Honestly, I think you should be a little more focused on the Arctic frontier opening up more and more every year due to global warming. Obviously, Iraq's oil becomes nothing in the light of this discovery. Did I mention that it's not just the U.S. making claims here?

I ask you to not bother responding if your comments follow the same format as your previous posts.

31 million Iraqis are glad that the U.S. took seriously its own beliefs about freedom and helped them through off the bonds of tyranny. Statists are never happy when individual freedom blossoms. They writhe at the thought of individuals voting and being free to express themselves through capitalistic endeavors. Long live the individual - death to tyrants like Saddam Hussein and those who support them!

EXACTLY!!!!! coz you are an ignorant.
your government is a Lobby, in fact it is the biggest lobby in the world. did you ever wonder how your economy broke down? NO! coz you're too busy counting the money you have left, forgetting about those who robbed your ass off! i invite you all to the middle east, and i mean it, i'm willing to take in anyone of you guys as soon as you step on the lebanese soil, and i'll show you around, i'll show you not what your troops did-we dont have any american soldier in lebanon- but the mess your governments interference has left behind.
your governmentS has turned the middle east into hell.
you are still crying until this day for those who died on 9/11, my people are still crying on the millions that have died since 1948 i.e. the year an arab country got dissected and stolen. we are the ones getting killed on daily basis, we are the ones getting raped, robbed, massacred, exiled, tortured etc...
you witness one horrible day, we've been witnessing 60 bloody years.
i still cant understand what makes your fallen better than ours? what makes YOU better than us? what makes a 25 years old american average guy better than me? I'll tell you what makes him better, he's an american. well fuck that I'm fed up with your stupid way of handling my anger, --this is simply how a so-called terrorist is created.good for you.
and by the way, to whomever is talking bullshit about us, we dont kill women and we don't rape women as much your free country does, you come on top of the list presented by the UNICEF every year.

Actually Lebanese, there were a few reasons why our (and the world) economy broke down, and I don't think I need to sit here and explain it all. Did I say anywhere that our fallen were better than yours? No. Did I say that an average 25 year old American is better than you? No. You did. That's the thing, stop assuming I (or we) all think alike, we don't. As I mentioned above, I don't agree with all of the policies and so forth of my country, but it doesn't mean I'm not proud to be American. The bit of text you quoted from me was more or less sarcasm. Either way, I believe what you are saying is more so directed to the politicians and CEOs of certain corporations more so than myself, but I'm not the one that needs to realize that. You are.
  • Scott · 7 months ago
"the mess your governments [sic] interference has left behind." That IS classic. Can you actually live in Lebanon and really be this dim as to the history of your own backyard? Doubtful. I bet you're an American teenager writing this from your midwest bedroom. The beauty of the internet. To blame the US for your region's inability to form and maintain a stable democratic government is just weak. The most stable countries in the mideast are all dictatorships. That tells you all you need to know.
  • THE Lebanese · 7 months ago
i agree with what you're saying jeremy, but it wasn't all a reply to what you said, the majority of what i said was for those who think they are better coz they are american. being proud about your american identity is the least you can do for your country and noone has the right to argue about that.
i'll i wanted to do is make it clear to everyone that you can't judge a whole culture for what its minority is doing, and trust it is a minority. as for the economy issue, it is not the CEOs we should be talking about, politicians YES governments YES, coz they did what they did knowing that the consequences are going to be for their favor. conspiracies are majorly coming from your governments' side, and it is sadly against most of the americans' wills. i do not agree with terrorist but i disagree as well with those who call me a terrorsit coz i'm a muslim arab, so what if i'm what i am? i dont pray just like the majority of the Arabs, if u get to read some of our news articles you'd come to realise that there are people out there in our arab world urging everyone to become leaders in what they do and not followers, from tech and sciences to literature,.
but still that doesnt make us forget that there's some unfairness in the way your government interferes in our internal issues.
i'm sorry if i offended you in some way i was just trying to explain my point of veiw and pardon my uncomprehending sentence building at certain points.

As a spouse of a Soldier who has been in combat more than a few times, I see this as trying to show the world that the decisions of those that are higher than our own power has decided our lives for us. My husband is not home with me tonight to discuss how I feel about these photos. OUR Soldiers didn't make the orders, those came from something much higher. But that OUR Soldiers are out there so that there is not a draft for anyone else to not have to make the choice is something that should be commended. I only wish more people could see that.

Look at where I'm from, the UK a relitively small country that banned guns, now the only people who can get them is criminals and gun crime is still strong. So if a small country like the UK can still have a massive gun problem years after they were banned dispite massive sentences just for possesing a firearm, do you really think you'll ever be able to disarm criminals in the USA? or do you think it'll be the shop owners etc that are disarmed and become lambs to the slaughter? silly people.
  • cassie · 7 months ago
I appreciate what you're trying to do here, but could you relay your message without wishing the death US soldiers in the process? The idea is clever, but you're more or less labeling our military as mindless murderers who deserve to die. I might be reading too much into this, but you should realize how your posters look from all points of view. As someone who will be enlisting in the military in a couple years, I take these kinds of messages to heart.
  • Hillary · 7 months ago
This is a cool artistic idea, but not used in a good context.

Look past the soldiers in the posters. Look at the meaning...the government is sending men and women overseas to fight in this war and what the poster depicts is EXACTLY WHATS HAPPENING! They are dying by the hundreds! And it is NOT the soldiers fault. They have to do what their "boss", a corrupt government, tells them to (hopefully that will change now that Bush is out of office...it will always be a little corrupt but maybe it will see a change for the better under a new leader).

Yes, they signed up for the military. It IS a job to them (in most cases one to be proud of) but I highly doubt they signed up just so they could go overseas and slaughter innocents, although I have met a few heartless soldiers who are in it only for the "kill" as they were calling it.

I see these posters as more of a creative attempt to try and show people what's going on than someone trying to disgrace and individual soldier. After all, anyone in any branch of the US Military is representing America. If you are overseas and wear the uniform, you are no longer just one person over there. You are a part of so much more, wether it is viewed as good or bad.

So look at the soldiers in these posters as America, not just one individual.

    Whew...hope that made sense....

i enjoy the nameless, faclessness which makes it possible for many of you to post your opinions on something about which none of you really know.
the only inferences we can make are from the information to which we are exposed concerning this matter, and i can guarantee that NOT ONE person posting on this website, including myself, knows all of the details about anything the united states government has ever done.
its nice that youve cultivated opinions over time, but theres no way any of us can be right, or tell anyone else that they are wrong. who are you to assume that the information that has been propagandized to you is completely valid?
im sure the soldiers have some idea about that of which they speak, but even THEY dont know the whole story. i know i dont either, but you really are casting fallible and erroneous judgment until your knowledge is absolutely omniscient.
  • William · 7 months ago
Nice. If these were about foreign policy, why are they being posted in public places? Public places, interestingly, that are more than likely never visited by the policy makers. And if you think that a poster is going to have an impact on what our government and policy makers think, then you probably bought the ban-guns-because-if-you-make-them-illegal-everyone-will-be-safe-then comment. As creative as these posters are, I can't praise them because they passively condone harm coming to our protectors, the soldiers, sailors, and aviators. It's shock value at the expense of our military. Makes me wonder what kind of country we have become. By the way, don't you get the feeling that no matter how many posters, marches, protests, petitions, and so forth, that we, the people, throw at our politicians, nothing really important seems to change? That's because at present time, we are not in control. They are. So please, if you don't like the war, do something else besides creating something a little shocking to look at to influence the minds of the common person. It's tasteless, condescending BS. What has our country become...

To 'the Lebanese' - I don't really have the time to educate you on your own country tonight, but I'll be glad to suggest some reading so you might come to understand the underpinnings of your current democracy which is supported, at least in gesture, by the US. And just so there is no misunderstanding, I didn't say there were no democracies in the middle east, just no 'stable' ones, with the exception of Iraq - and that still remains to be seen once we leave. As long as your government is impotent in controlling Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups that lob rockets into Israel every so often, I don't think you qualify as 'stable'. I recommend the following:

Book - A House of Many Mansions (Salibi)

Book - Lebanon - A History of Conflict and Consensus (Shehadi)

If you're in a hurry - or don't like to read:
    http://history.howstuffworks.com/asian-history/...

and of course the internet bible:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Lebanon

    Happy reading!

Well, i'm a veteran of the Iraq war, and I have to say that I think the design of these posters is genius. People (other vets) on this thread are blowing the posters out of context and taking it way too personally and getting "holier than thou" against anyone with differing political beliefs. I immediately saw the pictures as a metaphor for the American military machine, rather than representing the individuals depicted in the posters. Creative layout and design, very effective imagery.

  • SomeoneWhoThinks · 7 months ago
What spineless, self-hating automotans Liberal Americans have become.

Why weren't these posters designed with planes flying into the World Trade Center, or any of the hundreds, no - THOUSANDS - of Islamic terrorist attacks DELIBERATELY targetting innocents. Even if you just started 30 yrs ago with the Iran hostages, you'd have more material than you could ever possibly use.

But no - you choose to portray the men and women who put their lives on the line to DEFEND this nation as the culprits. The designers of this campaign are dispicable cowards & should be tried for treason.
  • marine spouse · 7 months ago
This is an idiotic idea. Our soldiers put their lives on the line everyday. To show them coming to any harm is a terrible way to say that we shouldn't be in this war. Of course i would like my marine to be home safe, but he made a commitment to fight for this country and you should be thanking him for that, not picturing his own gun back in his face. I feel bad for any soldier who ever has to see that one of the Americans they are protecting with their life would portray them in this way. You are a disgusting waste of intelligence.

If you have creative ideas, use them to thank your country, not to hurt the men and women who risk their lives everyday so that you can sit on your ass.
  • THE Lebanese · 7 months ago
well thank you for your time scott, but whatever links you gave talked about nothing but biased bullshit. not everything you are reading is true, and i honestly laughed my ass of when you were trying to argue with my about my knowledge in my own country's history. by the way, since there is democracy in lebanon then anyone can write and say anything he/she wants, but still, it might never be any way near the real thing.
you obviously know nothing about the middle east other than what you're reading o those silly posts. i'll give you an example, in one of the websites you posted back there, they were talking about the 1996 war(it was more like a one sided war) so here is an exempt:

"In 1996, Israel began sustained attacks on southern Lebanon to stop Palestinian rocket fire, ultimately leading to the displacement of 400,000 Lebanese. Fighting across the border ended in 2000 with the withdrawal of Israeli troops from their buffer zone in southern Lebanon."

first off, israel didnt attack because of the so-called Palestinian rockets, they attacked because of political reasons which i think you should read more about somewhere else. second of all, fighting across the border? what the heck? and the buffer zone israel occupied is nothing but lebanese soil with people living behind the line and under the israeli and lahd's merci.so basically israel occupied this land that righteously belonged to lebanon and we are talking about the southern part of lebanon not just a mile or two.eventually resistance groups were created sometime during the eighties and reached the year 2000 with a disgraceful israeli retreat back to the palestinian border.during that time israeli troops were attacked on daily basis within the lebanese terretories from lebanese people.

as for the recent issues, i really dont want to waste my own time on educating YOU on how things really are in the middle east, i feel sorry for you wasting your time trying to look up some sites to post here so that your hit back would look more elegant.idiot.

sure it shows "harm to the soldiers", I think that's the point: the foreign policy of your country not only screwed up big time, but it pushed your own people, your fellow countrymen, your soldieres, right into the line of fire ...

of course it is not the soldier's fault, and anyone who feels offended by the imagery clearly does not get the point: the criticism is aimed at the the people who put those soldiers right where they got shot

Reading through the posts, I totally see why people are ticked about the portrayal of soldiers in the layout - they don't "get" it.

Which really proves a key element of design -

any message that can be misinterpreted
    absolutely will be.

As far as I know, in my own experience,
even the people who are fiercely against the war are certainly not blaming the troops.

Part of what makes this nation great is the right to dissent, to question, and to second guess authority.

It's open, honest discourse that leads to better policy, and inevitably, better security.

I think these posters were intended to generate discussion, not assign blame to the troops.

    That would be stupid.
  • fu man tran · 7 months ago
an open letter to everyone who saw these posters as derogatory and hateful towards soldiers (US or otherwise):

    dear idiot,
try reading a book. it doesn't even have to be a long one, we can start easy. try dr. seuss, or even a book of fairy tales. like that one about a turtle and a rabbit sprinting.

am i being harsh? well sorry, but if you've ever read a book, or even just thought an independent thought, then you might recognize something called a metaphor. because that's what this poster is: from visual to headline, it's a metaphor. no soldiers were actually harmed in the making.

for you advanced students who have read a book or two, try using those fancy reading skills and applying them to the headline, since the visual is obviously far beyond your ken. "what goes around comes around." if we were supposed to understand this literally, what would we be talking about here? boomerangs? you decide.

in any case, try being less stupid in the future. if idiocy is absolutely unavoidable, please contact your nearest liberal, pot-smoking, America-hating hippie who will try his hardest to threaten you and your entire way of life.

"...for the sale of handguns and assault weapons. That’s where the problem is, as you can tell from the violence here and in Mexico."

Hitler thought the same thing, before he took firearms away from his people. I'm pretty sure we all know what happened to the Jewish people and political dissidents who couldn't defend themselves at that point...

...no. You are wrong. This is not opinion it is fact, backed up by statistics from around the world. A population of law-abiding gun owners will deter crime. Period.

Those who use guns for violent or unlawful purposes own those firearms illegally in most cases anyway... and will continue to have them regardless of the law. What you propose eliminates a persons right to defend themselves, which is a right that any person of any nationality or faith can embrace.

O'rly? Maybe you should reconsider the "few countries". You could pull that of in nearly every european country and you would not even have to deal with whiny patriots.

In case you did not notice: there is more than one democracy in the world and some of them alreadly learned that active violence and aggresive invasions are not the only ways to protect themselves. ;)

After reading some of the stupid pro-war posts here i can only wonder if you americans passed the last 50-80 years in isolation.

To anyone who says "If you don't like the U.S. LEAVE" are very un-American. Our entire founding doctrine is based on the belief of popular sovereignty and the will of the people. If we believe our country is not acting in the interests of the people it is our duty as Americans to change that. People who petition for change in certain aspects of government are just as patriotic as anyone serving in the military.

"a typical American thinks: ...." I understand posts that start this way ... it makes everything simple ... like all ignorant prejudice it enables one to neatly lump a people group together and "deal with them". American is a very, very large country with a very, very diverse population in every way you can image. I don't know if there is a "typical American" ... if there is, as close as I can tell (and I have lived here all my life, traveled extensively here and abroad) the "typical American" is very much like the typical Swede, Kenyan, Russian, Mexican, etc. They want to live a peaceful and happy life, enjoy their family, their children, their friends and for the most part be left alone by their government. This has been my experience at any rate.

How about a picture of Saddam Hussein standing on piles of Iraqi bodies (toss in a few piles of Iranians and Kuwatis for good measure and historical accuracy) with a sword pointed straight out in front of him wrapping around to stab himself in the back of the neck ... that works too ... amazing how f__king short human memory is especially when it is all puffed up with self-righteous indignation. I'm not an American but on behalf of all those liberated from life long tyrannical oppression in Iraq thanks, thanks for invading, though very costly in every way, thanks for freedom, so that even if it utilmately gets totally f__ked up, at least we were able to choose our own way as free men, and thanks for not just taking our oil (which you certainly could do) and not paying anything for it!

It shows harm to US soldiers because the US Foreign Policy will result in harm to US soldiers. It's not a hard concept to grasp.

"I would, on the other hand, like to see similar posters showing the ‘what goes around, comes around’ theme for the sale of handguns and assault weapons. That’s where the problem is, as you can tell from the violence here and in Mexico."

Actually, Rick, you can blame drug prohibition for that. Gang violence here or in Mexico has never been about gun control, but always about drug control. Legalize the drugs and it all goes away.

So basically it seems people cant ever see that you dont have to love the iraq war if you love america, and vice versa. I am a us soldier and have served in iraq. i hated being over there, for both obvious and more subtle ethical reasons. i love america, which is why i serve, but i dont agree with a lot of things america does. and i doubt im the only one. so please dont rag on each other for no reason. the ads are fresh and new. i dont really believe they villainize soldiers too badly, just the war

America is being reduced by the homogenized lowest classes of humanity. The dream will be over. Humans will ruin the model that was the dream. The dream will end because mankind will ruin it. America was a dream and it is coming to an end due to bad management and greedy political morons. So all the jealous ones will win the junk that is left over and that's all they deserve. Freedom will take a back seat to a knee jerk bureaucratic government.

The individual only cares for himself but when the utopia is lost the people go into a dark place for a long time. The evolution into a new and better society takes time, in the mean while their is anarchy.

I believe the message the images give is of a universal truth- our actions have consequences. That is true for the politicians who send the troops and for the men and women who pull the triggers.
Violence leads to violence. Its just the way it is.
I hope we can learn to talk to each other instead killing. Otherwise we are trapped in a cycle of murder going round and round just like the weapons that wrap around the poles....

Kudos to the soldier (Steve) who posted on May 21st for grasping the true subtlety of these amazing images. The majority of people in this country (WE ... the people ... y'know, the folks who the government supposedly work for) do not support the war. We DO, however, support our fellow Americans - the soldiers, who struggle every day simply to stay alive. The hawks in government and the members of the public who still support this war need to realize that their decisions and actions are the ones that continue to put our soldiers in harms way. They are so quick to extend their sympathies when we lose a soldier, but doesn't it makes sense that bringing them home is the quickest way to end the threat to their lives and our collective future? What goes around comes around, yes, but what these photos are saying is that our (country's) aggression usually comes back around to us ... and kills 'our brightest and our best' in the bargain.

What a cruel thing is war: Mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with HATRED instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world. ~Robert E. Lee, letter to his wife, 1864

the most offensive thing I've ever seen, that's just what army spouses need to see, a daily reminder their spouse could die at any moment while overseas.....f**king retards.....humanity cannot survive without war, get used to it
  • Lila · 6 months ago
Yeah your posters are f*cked up! Who are you to judge? Are you any better than anyone else? I don't think so! Go ahead, blame the troops for something that our leaders are doing if it makes you feel smart, but don't disrespect them! They spend months-years away from their families defending your right to be a dick! Maybe if you put a politician on the other end of that bullet instead of a loved husband, father, or friend it would be a little bit more accurate. When you're ready to risk your life for your right to speak and put up stupid posters like this let us all know, but until then stop being an asshole to the people who ARE fighting for YOUR right to publicly harass THEM!

Anybody who thinks that these "what goes around comes around" posters are a good thing or a "good idea" has no soul at all. basically what you are saying is, if you join the military to protect your family, friends and country you deserve death.
  • D Wreck · 6 months ago
and the way i see it seb...who gives one shit about a country of people who let their leaders this way or let the terrorist cells thrive in their countries. the number 1 reason we are in iraq and aphganistan is to protect the U.S. of A. last time i checked there were ZERO attacks on our soil since these wars started.
  • michigander · 6 months ago
The people who say this is 'sick' for 'showing harm to our soldiers' clearly don't get the point of these posters.

    THROWINGSTONES:
I could not have said it better myself. Glad to see that there are still some normal people out there. Citizens of the US are US Americans not americans, there are other americans as well, you seem to forget the country north of your own and the countries belonging to the south american continent. Enough said a bout that. A question: don’t you think that you are being brainwashed from the first day in school? being forced to swear allegiance to the flag etc…how absurd isn’t that? think you are among the few countries in the world still doing that, what about the democratic choice there? do you have to do that or do you have a choice? If you really want to do good, remove the dictator in North Korea. And how weird are your election system already, that isn’t true majority democracy is it? I have so many issues but only alimited amount of time and space…You do not have democracy in your country, that is what you are thought to believe.

    My Comment To This:

Just so you know, America is a republic. Choices are made through elected representatives. That is why our pledge of allegiance says, "And to the republic, for which it stands," and not, "And to the democracy..."

"Americans" is the accepted term for people who live in the United States of America. People from Mexico are called Mexicans. People from Canada are called Canadians.
  • James H. Frustrated · 6 months ago
Some of these people are completely missing the point. There's no helping you folks.

Also, it'd be useful to know that not everyone here is an American.

what goes around does come around, 9/11 ring a bell? suck it terrorists!!!!
  • Bruce · 5 months ago
The idea is clever, but it is not the way to make the anti-Iraq War statements.

Our soldiers are Americans. They are sons and daughters, husbands and wives. They have children. Their loved ones could lose them at any moment.

How dare you put up a poster with a gun to their heads?

Whether or not you support the war, this is the worst way to protest it. What do you say to a soldier's mother who see's this poster as a gun to her son's head.

Terrible Idea, Terrible Article. Anyone who supports this needs to rethink their morals.

Take the posters damn and the article offline.
  • Navy Girl · 5 months ago
While the design concept itself is unique and interesting, there is one major problem. If anyone involved in this campaign actually has to take the time to say, "This isn't aimed at the soldiers!" then they failed to clearly communicate their message. The potential interpretations are horrific.

you guys are disgusting for dipicting the images the way you do what i love about the people is not only are our front troops on the front line but you are throwing all of them right into another front line war a war we can not win because what most of you liberal civilian communists don't seem to care to come to realize is those of us fighting this war don't have a say in what we are sent or told to do we are given orders and we obide by those orders no matter what the circumstances are because that's what we are meant to do. i am assuming that all of you have a job where you have a boss who tells you what to do and what do you do when you are told to take this task on you do it you "complete your mission" as is were thats exactly what those of us are doing we are taking orders and completing our mission. now back to the origin of me starting this post is how can you even say that what comes around goes around with pictures of our military being put in harms way why dont you start to realize that we know damn well the things we are doing over seas aren't always right but we have to do it i am tired of people not thanking our troops for they're effort overseas and what we are doing dont you see the kill count we are dying in the line of duty to protect what our country believes in weather or not its what you indivdually believe in why not try making posters saying thank you for you hard work and thank you for having bullets bombs rockets grenades be thrown at you so i can sit here and post rediculous liberal bs back home while you are watching your brothers sisters comrades die next to you and thank you for going through the mental and physical anguish that you go through while there and thank you to those families that have lost loved ones for giving the ultimate sacrafice by allowing me to continue to write un-supporting jargain and to all those who have given your lives in the line of duty thank you for paying what will forever be reognized as the ultimate sacrifice that you will ever have to give your life. now liberals out there try writing that on walls and posters maybe even try saying that to someone in the military you see on the street walking driving because we are here to protect freedom your freedom with what ever means possible.
